From a conceptual point of view, "Moss" invokes thoughts of green, soft, serene, and natural... a living plant that grows delicately upon its host. Moss is not in a hurry, is not harmful, and has a gentle connection to the Earth below it. Why wouldn't we envy moss?
What is Moss Envy?
Moss Envy
is a 2500 square foot specialty retail store located in Minneapolis
that sells eco products for your home and life. Our product lines cover
a wide range of categories including furniture, home decor, gifts, jewelry, bath and body, stationery, clothing, mattresses, baby gear, building materials,
and more. Every product that is sold at Moss Envy was chosen because of
its eco-attributes and is somehow better for you, your family, your
community, or your world.
What is different about Moss Envy's products?
Moss Envy
sells eco alternatives to everyday products. The items that fill our
floor and shelves fit into one or more of the following categories:
recycled, reclaimed, natural, organic, sustainable, vintage, energy
saving, water saving, or fair trade. We also seek out, support, and
purchase from a number of local artists, designers, inventors, and
craftspeople.
The History of Moss Envy. Tina
and Ryan North's journey
as business partners began in 2006 in response to Tina's excellent eye
for "trash with potential" fueled by a tight budget during the
holidays. Tina's thrifty/craftiness resulted in some beautiful and
unique Tina-made gifts for her friends and family utilizing materials
that might have been discarded otherwise. Tina's ability to see the
sparkly diamond within the lump of coal didn't stop with small gifts.
She started finding chairs on the side of the road... and dressers, and
tables... "Can you believe what people just throw away?" With a little
creative TLC, Tina turned abandoned items into sell-able works of art
and function. But the North's only had so much garage space, so much
basement space, so much bedroom, livingroom, kitchen space... they had
to DO something about this... Tina's creations were taking over the
house. That was the beginning of their first store - "Re Gifts." "Re Gifts,"
focused on sustainable gifts. In 2007 (a year later), the eco-duo
opened "Twin Cities Green" in Uptown, expanding their concept to
include furniture, home goods, mattresses, and more. Both shops
generated critical praise and were wholly embraced by the local and
green community.
In the Spring of 2010, the North's took the next step in the growth of their business and moved
their store from Uptown to the Calhoun Lakes area. Their relocation served as an opportunity
to rename, rebrand, and refine their collection. Their newest eco-conceptshop is called, "Moss Envy."
Moss Envy
- incorporates the best of what worked at Twin Cities Green while
adding several new categories and a refined, more coiffed look. Tina
North adds eco-conscious clothing, building materials, and vintage
items to her home and life collection with a stronger emphasis on
sourcing locally, made-in-Minnesota products. This expansion
represents the most comprehensive collection of "better for you"
products in the Twin Cities. The creative re-do of the shop's design was led by local eco-designer and HGTV star Joshua Foss.

still somewhat new, there tends to be quite a bit of mis-information
floating around out there as well as outright lies. We want you to know
that we do our homework, ask the hard questions of our vendors, and vet
our products to the best of our abilities to bring you the most sincere
collection of products with eco-attributes! We pride ourselves on
being "real people" not sales people. We also appreciate how far a warm
greeting and a nice smile can go. Come in and find out for yourself!
A
set of twelve "eco-labels" and accompanying icons were developed to
help create an at-a-glance communication system so our customers could

About the Owners
Tina
and Ryan North are proud to be the owners of Moss Envy. Before they
were business partners, they were life partners. The eco-entrepreneurs
met in the late 90's while acting in the long running, interactive
theater show, "Tony 'n Tina's Wedding." (No, Tina did not play Tina.)
Ryan and Tina are stage and commercial actors by trade and still
continue to work, perform, direct, and teach across the metro. Ryan
also (as if he didn't have enough to do) enjoys graphic and website
design.
